Allow me to introduce you to the Red-eyed Crocodile Skink.
Since these guys were recently discovered (mid to late nineties), there isn’t a whole lot that is known about them, but I’ll share a few facts with you here.
- These guys can grow up to ten inches in length, though the average is more like seven.
- They’re pretty shy and choose to play dead as their defense mechanism.
- Other than geckos, these guys are one of the only lizards that vocalize. Their sound is described as a barking noise when they’re in distress
- Average lifespan is listed at around 6 years
resistance was futile
Update: YOU CAN HAVE ONE AS A PET.
Their average lifespan is ONLY 6 years? Holy cow.
As far as I know there’s no good captive breed colonies of them going so most are imported, therefore living shorter lives
That makes more sense. Knowing very little about husbandry that’s proper for these guys (believe me so much contradicting info out there on them! I once considered getting one as a pet!) can also add to that. I’ve a couple local friends who have successfully bred and hatched these guys. They are adorable. But not my cup of tea. Hopefully with more captive breeding going on and more detail on care for them the average lifespan will go up.
My fiancé and I plan to captive breed some to help out with keeping wild ones wild
